by Amanda Bahena E very immigration practitioner needs a solid relationship with a few trusted criminal defense attorneys. ese relationships will improve your client representation and give you piece of mind. And the possibility for referrals is invaluable. I have practiced criminal and immigration law and have seen the relationship from both ends. e following tips and reminders have helped me form quality relationships with criminal attorneys. 1) Your client comes first Nothing trumps a strong, personal relationship with your client. Don't leave that relationship to the criminal attorney. Personally vet your client's criminal and immigration history and discuss his goals, even if the criminal attorney has already done so. You will be looking for different information. Also, keep your client informed of all your discussions with the criminal attorney. ere is no such thing as too much client communication. is personal relationship will be key when your client needs to choose between the ideal criminal outcome and the ideal immigration outcome. You need to know your client's priorities and stand up for your client's immigration goals when necessary. Criminal attorneys will respect you for it, even if it means accepting a less than ideal criminal outcome. 2) Know the basics of criminal law Every immigration practitioner needs at least a basic understanding of criminal law and local criminal practice.
