PRACTICE&PROFESSIONALISM I n the fall of 2006, AILA launched the Practice & Professionalism Center (PPC) to help members improve the practice of law and the delivery of legal services to their communities. Te Practice & Professional- ism Center is dedicated to the shared ideals of the profession, including service to clients, ethical conduct, increasing competence, respect of the legal system, and pursuit of the public good. During 2010 we provided the following information and services: MENTORING • AILA mentors are members who have volunteered to provide advice to fellow members on specific areas of specialty within the immigration field. Te vol- unteer mentors report a high volume of inquiries and, indeed, the mentor direc- tory on InfoNet was used to look up the contact information for a mentor or mentors an average of over 1100 times each month during the year, an increase over the prior year. • In addition to the contacts with mentors by e-mail or telephone, on a typical busi- ness day, some 700 to 1,000 members visit the InfoNet Message Center to ask or answer questions about the practice of immigration law. PRACTICE MANAGEMENT & ETHICS ASSISTANCE Te Practice and Professionalism Center continues to gain in popularity among members, especially solo and small-firm members. Te PPC provides guidance on the business of practicing law, as well as eth- ical guidance. In 2010, the PPC answered— via e-mail, telephone, or in-person at con- ferences—hundreds of individual inquiries from members on ethics and practice man- agement topics. Other activities included: • Te PPC produced numerous articles on important management and ethics topics for conference publications and InfoNet including Creating Representation Agree- ments for Your Immigration Practice, Go- ing Global with Your Practice (Midyear CLE), Independence Day—Immigration Law and Te Solo Practitioner (An- nual Conference), and When You Go to Heaven Will Your Practice Go to Hell? • Te Ethics and Professionalism Commit- tee published two issues of its new quar- terly newsletter in the spring and fall. Te committee is preparing 4 issues for 2011 using AILA’s new digital publishing platform, Mygazines. • Assisted in the preparation of AILA’s comment to new interim disciplin- ary regulations promulgated by DHS Disciplinary Counsel in March, and continued to follow up on related issues throughout the summer and fall. • Assisted the annual conference planning committee in expanding the Law Practice Success track at the annual conference.
